La Quinta Roja is a hotel with history. It started life 4 centuries ago as the family home of the Marquis La Quinta Roja. Over the years it’s been damaged by volcanic eruptions and has even done a stint as convent. Fast forward to today and it’s been carefully converted into one of the island’s prettiest retreats, and you’ll find plenty of original features scattered around the property.

The hotel itself is a traditional stone Canarian building with peach-washed walls. And it’s undergone the ultimate makeover. The owners have teamed the timber ceilings, chunky stone walls and studded oak doors with modern low-slung sofas and chrome-stalked lamps.

This mix of old and new is carried through to the bedrooms where contemporary mosaic-tiled bathrooms meet bare stone walls and polished parquet floors. 21st-century touches come in the shape of satellite TVs and air-conditioning. They’re all clustered around a higgledy-piggledy paved courtyard complete with fountains and carved wooden galleries.

The bar-come-café opens onto a spacious terrace where wicker and glass set the scene for al fresco breakfasts. But it’s the tower that’s the real talking point. A time-warp space with vaulted wood ceilings, it’s kitted out with chocolate brown leather sofas and wraparound windows that frame widescreen views of Garachico.

As for location. This vintage hotel is in the heart of Garachico, on the edge of the town square. As such, there are plenty of tapas bars on the doorstep. And although there’s no pool here, a set of volcanic rock pools are close by.
