For Mediterranean charm, you can’t beat the Roseland Hotel. It sports Spanish-style archways which shade the balconies to its 64 rooms. And its gardens are dotted with hibiscus and bougainvillea, so there are plenty of quiet spaces.

The pool is the heart of the action here. It’s rectangular and framed by blue-and-white parasols. There’s a separate children’s pool and an outdoor whirlpool bath, too.

If you’re after saltwater rather than freshwater time, though, Kalamaki Beach is just a five-minute walk from the hotel. This two-and-a-half kilometre sandy stretch is a nesting place for loggerhead turtles, so between the sunbeds you’ll see fenced-off areas to protect eggs. The sands are backed by tavernas, as well, so it’s easy to grab a bite to eat.

Talking of food, the Roseland Hotel dishes up a Continental mix of cereal, toast and eggs for breakfast. On the evening à la carte menu, meanwhile, you’ll find a mix of Greek favourites like souvlaki – a grilled meat kebab – along with international fare. There’s also a snack bar.

In the bedrooms, simplicity is key. Light grey-tiled floors and white walls are livened up by brightly-coloured soft furnishings. There are TVs and, if you opt to pay a little extra, air-conditioning is available.
